“My heart is worship, period. My heart is worship through the arts,” declared Darrell Montgomery, encapsulating his lifelong devotion to worship ministry spanning over four decades.
In 1991, following an invitation from a friend, Darrell came to Bethel. Over the years, he assumed various roles within the church, including worship team leadership and service on the missions board. He met some of his lifelong friends, including his wife Stephanie. Together, they have adopted 3 boys. For a season, God moved them on to other ministry opportunities but Bethel was always a place he and his family called home. After some time, they made their way back to Bethel and he once again joined the worship team. Darrell’s favorite part of serving is meeting different people and coming together to lead and join others in worship. Being able to use his gift of singing and passion for helping others engage also ties into his gifts of prayer and leadership. “My heart is worship, period. My heart is worship through the arts.”
However, there are always challenges with the nature of the arts and being a singer. Human nature wants to be in the spotlight and have that validation from being “the lead.”
This is when “God always reminds me that it’s not about me, it’s about Him. He gives me those reminders and helps put things back into perspective and when I hear those things and when he’s helping me work those natural tendencies that come with being a singer, it helps me know, I’m staying in His footsteps because he’s reminding me what it’s about.”
If someone is thinking about being a part of a ministry at Bethel, Darrell encourages them to not let fear keep them from stepping into something that God may be calling them to. Remember “God does give a spirit of fear” (2. Tim. 1:7). Don’t let the enemy steal something from you that is meant to bless others. “When you acknowledge that that fear is not from God and you step into something… you’re going to build friendships, you’re going to find accountability, and you’ll see God at work in the ministry and your life through your service.”
